Practicing with a minor's permit

Legal rule

Under 18, you need a permit and supervision from a licensed California adult who is at least 25, such as a parent, guardian or instructor. Your permit must be validated by a driving instructor before you practice.

Example: A 19-year-old cousin offers to supervise. That doesn't qualify for a minor, so you practice with your aunt instead.

Check the official wording in the California Driver Handbook.

Supervised practice hours

Legal rule

Teens must log supervised driving time, including some at night, before taking the drive test. Study apps and quizzes don't count toward these hours.

Example: You've aced every practice exam, but you still need your night hours, so you schedule evening drives.

Check the official wording in the California Driver Handbook.

Taking the knowledge test

Legal rule

Study before the test, not during it. Phones, notes and other help are not allowed while you take the official exam. Check the DMV website for current test format and passing requirements.

Example: On test day you leave your phone in the car and rely on what you've practiced.

Check the official wording in the California Driver Handbook.
